MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers posted a statement win on Wednesday night in the Health & Sports Center with a 71-66 win over the number one team in the region, Rollins, in Sunshine State Conference women’s basketball action.

After leading by eight at the half, the Bucs (17-8, 11-4 SSC) led by 11, 45-34, at the 14:18 mark of the second half after a layup by Yvonne Houston. But the Tars (20-5, 11-4 SSC) whittled the lead down to one and took a 56-55 lead at the 9:26 mark on a turn-around jumper by Ashley Losch.

With the game tied at 62-62 after Kourtnie Berry’s three-pointer for the Tars, the Bucs scored five straight points on a runner in the lane by Shanna Suttington and a three-point play by Danielle DeBerry. Suttington and DeBerry hit four-for-four from the free throw line in the final 1:09 to seal the win.

Suttington tied a season high with 21 points while Houston added 20. DeBerry chipped in 13 and Alexandria Zamora added 10 points and nine rebounds. For the Tars, Ashley Jones led the way with 16 points.

The win leaves the Bucs in a position to grab a share of the conference regular season title. Florida Southern closed out their season with a win over Tampa, leaving them at 12-4 on the season. The Bucs close out the regular season hosting the Saint Leo Lions on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 2:00 pm. The Tars finish on Saturday at Nova Southeastern.
