VALDOSTA, Ga.—Barry University’s baseball team dropped the final game of the VSU Classic Sunday losing to Delta State University 4-3.

The Statesmen (8-1) grabbed an early two run lead in the bottom of the third inning after a pair of this and two walks off right hander Kevin Youst.

The Bucs (4-7) were able to put a run on the board in the top of the sixth inning when Adrian English drove in Sheehan Planas, but Delta State wasted little time answering in the bottom of the frame with a home run to deep center.

In the top of the eighth the Bucs loaded the bases after singles by Michael Slabach and Luis Arrizurieta as well as a walk to Plannas. However, an infield fly and a base-running blunder squandered the opportunity of a big inning and Barry would come away with only one run.

After two quick outs to start the ninth inning, Barry kept the pressure on the Statesmen with a single by Andy Ruiz, followed by a Slabach walk, and an RBI single by Arrizurietta to tie the game at 3-3. Unfortunately, the rally came up just short as the Bucs stranded the go-ahead run on second base.

Kevin Youst scattered six hits in six innings of work, allowing just three runs while striking out five. Calvin Rayburn (1-1) was tagged with the loss after surrendering a run in two innings of work.

Offensively, the Bucs were led by Arrizurieta who finished 2-for-5 with one RBI. Slabach, Plannas, Halpern, and Ruiz each added a hit for the Buccaneers.

Barry will continue on the road when they travel to Davie, Fla. on Tuesday to battle the Sharks of Nova Southeastern in a non-conference matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. with live-stat and video broadcast available.
