MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry women's tennis team needed every bit of three hours to roll to an 8-1 win over Southern Mississippi Friday at Buccaneer Tennis Center.
The No. 2-ranked Buccaneers, which compete in NCAA Division II, won their 12th straight match to open the season over an Division I team searching for its second win this year.
"It's always good to beat a Division I school," Barry coach Avi Kigel said. "We played well overall."
The Buccaneers will host Oklahoma Christian at noon Sunday.
Vojka Lukic and Linda Fritschken, ranked No. 15 nationally in doubles, beat Southern Mississippi's Kate Lanier and Frances Askew, 8-2, at the No. 1 pairs spot. Barry's Cristina Valladares and Mona Mansour defeated Elja van Berlo and Alex Bradley, 8-6, at No. 2. Julie Stas and Sarah Krohnen combined to help the Bucs sweep the doubles with an 8-6 win over Moorea Williams and Mackenzie Oskin at the No. 3 flight.
Lukic, ranked No. 33 in the nation, survived a first-set loss to beat Alexus Coats, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1, at the top singles flight. At No. 2 singles, in the last match to finish, van Berlo beat No. 48 Valladares, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-7. That was Barry's lone loss.
No. 49 Caroline Wendling beat Kate Lanier, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3. Krohnen beat Mackenzie Oskin, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4. Stas defeated Moorea Williams, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 5. Akemi Maehama beat Alex Bradley, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 6.
"It's a good win against a Division I school," Kigel said. "I'm looking forward to Oklahoma Christian and then to be challenged by region opponents.
"What I like about this team is everybody is taking care of themselves. We want to see that consistency of good energy and intensity."
