SAINT LEO, Fla.—Barry University’s baseball team split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon versus Saint Leo losing the first 3-4 before coming back to win the nightcap by a final of 2-1.
In game one Barry (11-10, 5-1 SSC) grabbed the early lead on a homerun to right field off the bat of Michael Slabach in the top of the third.
The Lions (16-8, 3-3 SSC) wasted no time in getting the run back crossing home plate four times in the bottom of the third capped off by a two RBI single to right by Michael Revell.
Both teams struggled to score through the next four innings, but the Bucs wouldn’t go down without a fight. Barry tacked on a run in the eighth on an RBI single down the leftfield line that scored Harold Holness.
In the ninth Luis Arrizurieta led things off with a base hit and Bryant Elliott followed with a triple to deep center that brought Barry within one. Elliott attempted to score on a sharp grounder off the bat of Adrian English but was gunned out at the plate and the next two batters flew out to end the threat.
Kevin Youst (1-0) allowed four runs in six and a third innings and struck out five but was tagged with the loss. Slabach led the charge offensively going 2-for-4 with a homerun and two RBI. Arrizurieta and Bryant Elliott each added a pair of hits for the Bucs.
Charles Nelly (4-2) scattered six hits in seven innings allowing just one run and striking out three in rout to the win.
In the nightcap the Bucs fell erased an early one run deficit with a Bryant Elliott solo homerun to right to even the score in the second inning.
The game remained knotted up at one until Michael Slabach broke the 1-1 tie with his second homerun of the day, this time from the right side of the plate, giving Barry the 2-1 advantage.
Both starters went the distance but Jordan Wellander out-dueled Rick Teasley in the end. Wellander (4-2) finished his first complete game of the season scattering five hits in seven innings, allowed just one run and struck-out four.
Slabach led the charge in the second game once again as he finished 2-for-3 with a homerun and an RBI.
Barry returns to action this Wednesday when they’ll host Southern Connecticut State at Feinbloom Field.
