MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—Barry University’s baseball team split a conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon winning game one 6-3 before dropping the nightcap versus Florida Southern 1-0.
GAME ONE
The first game of the doubleheader was an exciting pitcher’s duel between Barry’s Kevin Youst and Clay Chapman. Both pitchers kept the opposing bats in check and Chapman faced the minimum through the first five innings.
Florida Southern (15-12, 6-6 SSC) struck first in the top of the fourth inning after Austin Chubb connected on a homerun to leftfield. However, Youst regained his composure and then in the bottom of the sixth inning Sam Halpern evened the game at one on his second homerun of the season.
Bryant Elliott stepped in with the game knotted up at one in the eighth and a runner on second and delivered. Elliott drove the ball over the fence in the left-center alley for his third homerun of the season to give the Bucs a 3-1 lead.
The Buccaneer lead lasted all but one inning as the Mocs were able to get to Youst for two more runs in the top of the eighth inning to even the score, but a three run frame for Barry would prove to be the difference.
In the eighth Harold Holness broke the 3-3 tie with his first homerun of the season. An RBI double by Adrian English and an RBI single off the bat of Sheehan Planas-Arteaga added the needed insurance.
T.J. Mullins worked a scoreless ninth to pick up his fifth save of the season.
At the plate the Bucs were led by Sheehan Planas who finished 3-for-4 with one RBI and a run scored. Bryant Elliott also had two hits, including his two-run blast.
GAME TWO
If game one was a pitcher’s duel, game two continued the trend as both starting pitchers delivered strong performances. Jordan Wellander (4-3) took the mound for the Bucs (14-11, 7-2 SSC) looking for their first ever three game sweep against the Moccasins in school history.
The right-hander threw six and a third innings allowing just three hits and one run will striking out five along the way.
The lone run for the Mocs came in the top of the sixth when J.J. Downum led off the inning with a single through the right side. Corey Jensen advance Downum on a sacrifice bunt and following a walk and a strikeout Austin Chubb singled through the left side to plate Downum.
Barry threatened in their final at-bat but were unable to drive in the tying run as Andy Ruiz, who pinch ran for Tim Blackmon, was stranded on second.
Jon Jones (2-4) threw five innings allowing zero runs and just two Buccaneer hits in the nightcap to earn the victory.
Bryant Elliott and James Young picked up the only three hits for the Bucs in game two. Elliott finished 1-for-2, and Young 2-for-2.
