Men's Golf Finishes 5th at Florida Blue SSC Championships

BRADENTON, Fla. -- Barry University men's golf team finished fifth at the Florida Blue Sunshine State Conference Championships Tuesday.

The No. 1 nationally-ranked Buccaneers, who entered the final round in sixth place, moved up a spot in the last 18 holes. Barry shot 318 Tuesday to finish with a three-round total of 925 on The Concession Golf Club par-72, 7,147-yard course.

Nova Southeastern won the league tournament after shooting a final-round 297 to finish at 12-over 876. Florida Southern was second at 913, and Florida Tech placed third a stroke behind the Moccasins.

Nova had the top four individual finishers -- Ben Taylor winning it all with an even-par 216. He shot 5-under 67 in the third round. Sharks teammate Oscar Lengden was second at 1-over 217, following his final-round 75. Ricardo Celia and Mitch Farrer tied with Florida Tech's Christian Westhorpe for third at 223.

Barry's top finisher was Simon Forsslund, who closed with a 76 Tuesday to settle into a three-way tie for 11th at 229. Teammate Daniel Stapff tied for 18th after shooting 78 in the third round for a 233. Scott Smyers tied for 20th at 234 after shooting 80 in the final round. Marcus Segerstrom tied for 22nd at 235 following his 85 Tuesday. Marcelo Huarte shot 84 in the last round to place in a tie for 29th at 240.

Forsslund eagled the 561-yard, par-5 17th in the third round. He also birdied the 432-yard, par-4 ninth Tuesday.

Smyers birdied back-to-back holes on the par-3, 190-yard 14th and par-4, 421-yard 15th in his closing round. He had three birdies Tuesday and seven in the two-day tournament.

Barry will compete in the Super Regional May 7-9 at Rock Barn Golf Club in Conover, N.C.
