LAKELAND, Fla. -- Barry University men's tennis team ran through its quarterfinal match with Florida Tech, winning 5-0 Thursday to open the Florida Blue Sunshine State Conference Championships at Beerman Tennis Center.
The No. 3-seeded Buccaneers (19-5) move onto Friday's semifinals to meet second-seeded Rollins (15-6). The No. 6-seeded Panthers (13-12) will play in the tournament backdraw.
Ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division II, Barry swept the doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead in the match against the No. 42-ranked Panthers.
Daniel Schmidt and Fabian Groetsch captured the Bucs' first point with an 8-1 win over James McClane and Daniel Armellino. At No. 3 pairs, Ollie Lemaitre and Romain Costamagna beat Riley Lorenz and Barry Dylewski, 8-4. Barry's No. 13-ranked duo of Marco Mokrzycki and Leo Vivas snagged the final doubles point with an 8-4 win over Nicolas Clerc and Michael Schmidt at No. 1.
Lemaitre beat Armellino, 6-1, 6-0, to give the Bucs their first singles victory at the No. 5 flight. At No. 6, Kevin Sielmann defeated swept Lorenz, 6-0, 6-0, to wrap up the match.
All postseason matches are complete when a team reaches five points.
Thursday's first day of the scheduled three-day league tournament experienced a few rain delays, pushing matches back Friday for both the men and women.
