MELBOURNE, Fla. – Barry University’s baseball team swept conference foe Florida Tech on Tuesday winning the final two games of the series by final scores of 8-7, and 7-0. Barry and Florida Tech were forced to finish game one of the series prior to the start of the doubleheader, resulting in three wins in one day for the Bucs.
Game One
After finishing up Monday night’s game which was postponed, the Bucs and Panthers began the scheduled doubleheader to wrap up the three game series.
In game one of the doubleheader, the Bucs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Florida Tech answered with two runs of their own in the first.
The Panthers scored in each of the first four innings to grab the 5-2 lead and eventually knocked out Buccaneer starter, Jordan Wellander, out of the game.
The Buccaneers stayed within striking distance thanks in part to the bullpen, and tied the game on Andy Ruiz’s RBI single to right in the seventh inning.
With the score even, the Buccaneers capitalized on a pair of errors and plated three runs in the eighth.
Barry used five pitchers in the game as Tyler Kinley (1-0) earned the win throwing one and a third innings while only allowing a run.
T.J. Mullins also worked an inning and a third and picked up the save in game two of the series after earning the win in the postponed game earlier in the day.
The Bucs stranded 14 runners but did manage eight runs on 14 hits. James Young finished the game going 3-for-5 and Sam Halpern also led the charge with a 2-for-5, 2 RBI performance.
Game Two
Barry picked up where they left off, striking for four runs in the top of the first inning capped off by Sam Halpern’s 2 RBI double to deep center.
In the second, the Bucs added another run on a Tim Blackmon sacrifice fly that scored Julio Ramos who led off the inning with a single up the middle.
Brad McAllister filled up the strike zone and kept the Panther bats quiet throughout the game. The Panthers threatened in the fifth with the first two runners reaching safely, but McAllister induced the groundball double play and struck out the next hitter to retire the side.
McAllister (5-2) worked six innings and scattered just four hits, allowed just four runs and struck out four.
Alex Decker worked a scoreless seventh to close out the win.
The Bucs tacked on a pair of runs late and finished the three game sweep of Florida Tech with a 7-0 victory in the final game of the series. The win lifts the Buccaneers to 23-22, 13-9 in SSC play on the season, finishing 2012 with a winning record.
In the nightcap the Bucs were led offensively by senior Lyndon Coleman who finished the game going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Sam Halpern capped off a strong weekend with a 1-for-3 performance and 3 RBI.
