MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Four former Barry University baseball players are making their marks in professional ball.
Third baseman Yan Gomes was recently called up to the Big League by the Toronto Blue Jays. He made his Major League debut May 17. He is batting .200 with two home runs and six RBI in 13 games with the Blue Jays. In 41 games in the Minor Leagues while playing with the Las Vegas 51s, the Blue Jays' Triple-A Pacific Coast League affiliate, he was hitting .341 with seven home runs, 19 doubles and 30 RBI. Gomes was a 10th round selection of the Blue Jays in the 2009 draft.
First baseman Dean Green is hitting .306 with 16 doubles, nine homers and 38 RBI with the West Michigan Whitecaps, a Class A Midwest League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. Green was chosen in the 11th round of the 2011 draft by the Tigers.
Second baseman Nick Shaw is batting .255 with 17 doubles, a homer, 16 RBI and five stolen bases with the Brevard County Manatees, the Class A Advanced Florida State League affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. Shaw was selected in the 25th round in the 2010 draft by the Brewers.
Pitcher Manny Rodriguez begins his season with the Auburn Doubledays, the Class A short season affiliate of the Washington Nationals, on June 18. Last year he went 2-3 with a 4.65 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 50 1/3 innings while making 12 starts with Auburn.
