MIAMI — Former Barry University women’s basketball players Yvonne Houston and Princess Bailey are making their mark in Miami in the professional circuit.

Both began playing for the Miami Rain of the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League in May.

Primarily a weekend league that runs into late July, the WBCBL is a semi-pro operation, featuring teams from all parts of the country. The Rain play a 10-game regular season schedule against Florida teams. The WBCBL national tournament will be held Aug. 3-5 at Don Shula’s Hotel in Miami Lakes.

"We are excited to hear that two of our former Buccaneers are now playing semi-pro basketball," Barry head coach Bill Sullivan said. "Yvonne and Princess were exceptional players during their years at Barry, and it is no surprise that both are now starters for the Miami Rain. We are very proud of Yvonne and Princess, and we wish them continued success."

Houston scored 13 points and pulled down five boards in her debut with the Rain, a 70-54 road win over the Fort Lauderdale Lions May 12. Bailey had six points, five rebounds and four steals.

Nine days later, Houston scored 14 points, going five of six from the field, and had two steals in an 80-55 road win over the Palm Beach Storm. Bailey had eight points, seven boards and a whopping eight steals. Bailey had eight points, eight boards and three steals in the Rain’s 94-72 home win over the Brevard Flame on June 2. Houston had five points in a 74-65 home win over the Orlando Extreme on June 9.

Bailey ranks among Barry’s career leaders in nearly every major statistical category. Houston is the school’s 15th leading scorer.
