NEW YORK -- Barry University men's golf team jumped up one spot to claim the No. 1 national ranking in the Golf World/Nike Golf College Coaches Poll.
Barry earned eight of a possible 17 first-place votes, moving ahead of Sunshine State Conference and current national rival Nova Southeastern. The Buccaneers finished ahead of the Sharks to win the Brickyard Invitational to open the season in Indianapolis.
The Bucs, under the direction of 11-year coach Jimmy Stobs, the program's all-time winningest coach, received 408 points in the poll. Nova earned three first-place votes and 374 points. Abilene Christian (Texas) was third with two first-place votes and 306 points, followed by North Alabama and Western Washington.
Chico State (Calif.) received one first-place vote, and is ranked sixth. Chico won the three-day stroke play portion of last season's NCAA Division II National Championships in Simpsonville, Ky.
Four SSC teams are ranked in the coaches poll.
Barry will compete in Nova's Shark Invitational at PGA National Monday and Tuesday in West Palm Beach.
BUCCANEER GOLF DAY: Barry's eighth annual Buccaneer Golf Day is set for Friday, Oct. 12 at Normandy Shores Golf Club in Miami Beach. Play begins with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Members of the 2007 NCAA Division II National Championship will be part of the day's activities. Proceeds from the raffle to win a Taylor Made R11 driver will support Pals for Paws.
