MELBOURNE, Fla. – Barry University’s women’s soccer team made another push towards deciding their playoff fate Saturday afternoon, defeating Florida Tech University, 1-0.

The Panthers (6-5-3, 2-4-2 SSC) entered the match one spot ahead of the Bucs in the conference standings with six teams separated by only four points, all vying for a playoff spot.

In the early going Florida Tech applied plenty of pressure with three shots on goal in the first five minutes of the match, and the Bucs’ defense knew it was in for a tough fight.

In the first half Emma Karp connected on a pass with Lavinia Nkomo down the right side of the field, who then centered the ball in front of the box where it was finally put home by Kayla Hodge for the game’s first goal. The goal, scored in the fifth minute, was Hodge’s third of the season.

With an early 1-0 advantage Barry (6-6-1, 3-4-1 SSC) was able to hold off a persistent Panther attack. Florida Tech out-shot the Bucs 22-7 and held a 12-3 advantage in the first half alone.

Buccaneer goalkeeper Becca Rogers was spectacular making numerous saves throughout the match. In the first half Rogers came up with eight of her 12 difficult saves in order to preserve her fifth shutout of the season.

With the win, Barry now turns its sights on Lynn University. The Buccaneers travel to Boca Raton, Fla. Wednesday in a showdown with the rival Fighting Knights. Live coverage will be available through the Barry University athletics website, GOBARRYBUCS.COM.
