MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University’s baseball team got off to hot start with an impressive 10-5 victory over Georgia Southwestern Friday night at Feinbloom Field.

The Hurricanes (0-1) struck fast with a four-run inning in the top of the first as a result of a pair of defensive miscues by the Bucs, but senior Kevin Youst didn’t let it affect him as he battled throughout the night.

The Buccaneers (1-0) bounced back in the third inning with an offensive outburst that started with freshman Michael Diaz. A leadoff walk to Diaz was followed by single off the bat of Joe Iorio and a walk to shortstop JC Cardenas. With the bases loaded Michael Slabach drove in the Bucs’ first run with a sacrifice fly to right.

Luis Arrizurieta added another run with a single to centerfield and Sheehan Planas-Arteaga missed a homerun by the slimmest of margins. Planas’ double off the wall in right-center drove in two and tied the game at four.

Tyler Kellmann added an RBI double to right-center to give Barry the 5-4 lead after third inning.

Youst continued to work as he held the Hurricane’s to four consecutive scoreless innings, scattering five hits in five innings striking out three and allowing just four unearned runs.

Georgia Southwester evened the game at five in the top of the seventh but the Bucs answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame and two more in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Tyler Petsch picked up the win in relief throwing three strong innings while striking out three and allowing just one run.

Starter Frank Ambrosino was tabbed with the loss after giving up five runs in five innings.

Arrizurieta, Adrian English, Kellmann, Iorio, and Cardenas each finished the game with two hits.

English and Kellmann each finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. Billy Atkins pitched a scoreless ninth in his collegiate debut picking up a pair of strikeouts in the process.
