WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Barry University senior Max Wimmer was named the Sunshine State Conference men's tennis Player of the Week presented by VALIC.

A native of Brenau, Germany, Wimmer returned to the court this spring after a one-year hiatus. He won a pair of matches at the top flights in Saturday's season opener at Florida Tech.

Along with fellow German Marco Mokrzycki, Wimmer collected his first doubles win since 2011 when the Buccaneers duo beat Florida Tech's Beau Fieldsend and Bruno Rodrigues, 8-0, at No. 1 doubles. Wimmer also posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Fieldsend at No. 1 singles.

"He played pretty solid, especially considering he hasn't been in competition for over a year now," Barry assistant coach Thomas Hipp said. "The first match is not the easiest one, but he seemed to loosen up pretty quickly. In the middle of the first set, he was starting to return better."

Wimmer is a three-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American. He won a national title with the Buccaneers in 2010.

Barry hosts Rollins College Sunday at 10 a.m. at Buccaneer Tennis Center.
