No. 2 Bucs Men's Tennis Down No. 13 'Lopes

AUSTIN, Texas – Barry University men’s tennis team won its second match over a ranked opponent in as many days at St. Edward’s University Saturday. The No. 2-ranked Buccaneers beat No. 13 Grand Canyon, 8-1, to bump its school-record consecutive match win streak to begin a season to 19 straight.

The Bucs (19-0) improved to 11-0 over ranked teams this season. Barry will finish its three-match stay in Austin with Sunday’s 9 a.m. CST test against No. 25 St. Edward’s.

Barry won all three doubles matches against the Antelopes (12-6) by identical 8-3 scores. No. 2-ranked Marco Mokrzycki and Fabian Groetsch beat Ahmad Saleem and Arjun Bal at No. 1. Max Wimmer and Ollie Lemaitre defeated Felix Schueller and Alexander Roggenkamp at No. 2. Renato Lombardi and Kevin Sielmann beat Yann Kaelin and Meidy Chazeau at No. 3.

The Buccaneers won the top five singles matches, while dropping the No. 6 flight.

Wimmer moved into a tie for third place on the school’s career singles wins leader’s list with 63 when he beat Kaelin, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1. Wimmer is four away from matching assistant coach Thomas Hipp’s record of 67 victories. The Bucs have three regular season matches left before beginning postseason play in the Sunshine State Conference Championships April 18-20 at South County Regional Park in Boca Raton, Fla.

Romain Costamagna won his second straight three-set match in Austin, beating Saleem, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2. Leo Vivas took care of Schueller, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 3 to improve to 12-1.

Lombardi won his second match of the day when he defeated Bal, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4. Sielmann also won two matches Saturday, beating Roggenkamp, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5.

Grand Canyon’s Ramon Abaitua defeated Alejandro Andino, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 6.
