Men's Tennis Completes Texas Trifecta

AUSTIN, Texas – Barry’s No. 2-ranked men’s tennis team completed a perfect weekend in its three-match swing through Texas with a 9-0 sweep at No. 25 St. Edward’s Sunday.

The Buccaneers (20-0) beat three ranked teams in Austin. They will close the regular season at home this week, beginning with Thursday’s 3 p.m. match against St. Thomas. The Bucs, who extended their school-record consecutive win streak to 20 to begin a season with Sunday’s victory over the Hilltoppers, will finish the regular season on Senior Day 3 p.m. Saturday at Buccaneer Tennis Center.

For the second straight day, Barry won all three doubles matches by 8-3 scores. Ranked second in the nation, Marco Mokrzycki and Fabian Groetsch beat Felix Bake and Pedro Bronstrup at the top flight. Max Wimmer and Ollie Lemaitre bested James Rogers and Maximo Agoglia at No. 2. Romain Costamagna and Leo Vivas defeated Ivan Vaz and Adrian Garza at No. 3.

Ranked No. 22 in the country, Wimmer survived a third-set match tiebreaker to beat Rogers, 6-1, 2-6, 10-1, at No. 1 singles to move into sole possession of third place on the school’s all-time career victory list with 64. He is three shy of matching Bucs assistant coach Thomas Hipp’s record of 67.

The Buccaneers won the remaining singles matches in straight sets. Groetsch, ranked 19th, beat Bronstrup, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2. Lemaitre defeated Agoglia, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3. Renato Lombardi doubled up Bake, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4. Kevin Sielmann cruised by Garza, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5. Alejandro Andio breezed past Jacob Belanger, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 6.

The Bucs are 12-0 against nationally-ranked teams this season.
