Softball Earns Third Straight NCAA Tournament Bid

INDIANAPOLIS—The Barry softball lived to fight another day when the NCAA announced the bid for the 2013 Division II Softball Tournament on Monday. The Buccaneers, who sit at 32-18 and finished a game out of first place in the Sunshine State Conference, received their third straight regional bid, a sixth-seed in the South Region II.

The Bucs will travel to Huntsville, Ala., for the tournament and will face off against the third seed, the North Alabama Lions, at 4:00 pm Central Time on Friday, May 10. In the other first round game, the host UAH Chargers will face the West Alabama Tigers at 7:00 pm Central.

The Bucs went 5-7 against six other teams who made the field, including wins against three automatic qualifying schools.

Seniors Sarah Broeseker and Alexis Yohe lead the Bucs at the plate and in the circle respectively. Broeseker is batting .423 with 32 runs scored and 32 RBI. She leads the team in doubles (13), triples (4) and walks (20) as well. Yohe is 18-7 with a 1.38 ERA and 136 strikeouts in 162.2 innings. She tossed 19 complete games, including eight shutouts and held the opposition to a .193 average.

For the Bucs, it was their third straight bid and the sixth in eight years under head coach Danielle Penner. Overall, it is the 17th trip to the championship in 28 years of the program.
