Women's Tennis Doubles Duos Advance at FIU

MIAMI -- Barry University women's tennis teammates Akemi Maehama and Cristina Valladares paired for 9-8 (4) doubles victory, and Bucs partners Elisabeth Abanda and Karina Goia were 8-2 winners Friday in the Florida International Panther Invitational.

Both Bucs doubles teams advance to Saturday's 9 a.m. semifinals in Flight One.

Goia was a 6-2, 6-2 singles winner in the Flight 1 singles draw. Maehama won her Flight 2 singles match in easy fashion, 6-2, 6-1, and Valladares survived a three-set match to remain alive in the second singles flight, claiming a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 victory.

All three advance in their respective singles flights to Saturday's semifinals.

Abanda lost her opening-round match, 6-1, 6-0. She plays in the Flight 1 consolation semifinals Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Barry freshman Jasi Witherspoon dropped her Flight 3 match, 6-0, 6-3. She will play in the consolation semifinals Saturday at 3 p.m.
