TAMPA, Fla. – Barry University women’s basketball team lost to Tampa, 74-42, Saturday in the Martinez Center. The Buccaneers fell to 11-7 overall, 4-5 in the Sunshine State Conference.

The Bucs were playing catchup the entire way, but shooting struggles hampered them from putting a dent into a large hole they fell in. Barry, which trailed by as many as 29 in the first half, opened the second half with baskets by Ines Kerin and Kaylia Richardson 1:53 into the second half. Neither team scored for 3:12 after that. But following a pair of Spartans free throws, Kerin drained a 3-pointer from the corner and Hardy sank two free throws to cut it to 55-31.

Tampa, which is receiving votes in the NCAA Division II Top 25 poll, ran its lead out to 32 at the 8:59 mark before Kerin popped a triple from the top of the key. Richardson scored to trim the gap to 27, but it was too little too late.

Tyler Hardy had 19 points and six rebounds. Kerin finished with eight points, three assists and two steals. Richardson had six points and eight boards. Tampa’s Ellen Nurmi had 26 points and five assists, and Shamika Williams finished with 13 points, six assists and five rebounds.

Barry shot 15 of 65 from the field for 23.1 percent. Tampa (14-5, 7-2) was 27 of 56 for 48.2 percent. The Spartans’ bench outscored the Buccaneers, 19-6.

Emily Schahczinski had two straight buckets as the Bucs drew within 43-20 inside the last minute of the first half. The Bucs trailed at the intermission, 47-20. Hardy scored 11 points in the opening half on 4 of 6 shooting.

The Buccaneers were 7 of 30 from the field in the first half. Tampa was 18 of 31 from the floor, and 5 of 10 from three-point range. Barry was 0 of 10 from long distance.

Barry will host Florida Southern at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
