PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – The Barry Buccaneers defeated Palm Beach Atlantic, 2-1, Saturday at Palm Beach Gardens HS field.

Calvin Rayburn (3-2) went the distance and shut down the Sailfish’s offense for his second complete game of the season. The hard throwing right-hander struck out five in nine innings and allowed just one run.

The Buccaneers (23-15) manufactured a run in the third when Brendan Shaw led off with a single and advanced on J.C. Cardenas’ sacrifice bunt. Sheehan Planas-Arteaga followed with an RBI single up the middle to give Barry a 1-0 lead.

In the fifth, Barry added another run when Adrian English drove in Cardenas with a sacrifice fly liner to center field to make it a 2-0 game.

The two runs would prove to be more than enough for Rayburn who scattered six hits and allowed just one run. The Sailfish out-hit the Bucs 6-4, but pushed across just one run, in the sixth and fell by a final score of 2-1.

Planas-Arteaga continues to swing a hot bat and finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a pair of walks.

The Bucs and Sailfish will play the rubber-match Sunday at 1 pm with live-stats and audio broadcast coverage available through Barry University’s athletics website, GOBARRYBUCS.COM.
