WINTER PARK, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers tied the Tampa Spartans 1-1 in the opening round of the NCAA South Region Women’s Soccer Tournament at Sandspur Field on Friday night, but fell 3-2 in penalty kicks to end their season.

The Bucs (12-4-3) grabbed an early lead when Tampa’s Candice Sheilds was whistled for a hand ball just inside the penalty box. Lauren Manna converted the kick for her 10th goal of the year in the 29th minute.

The lead held up, despite tremendous pressure from the Spartans (15-3-2) who out-shot Barry 17-5. But in the 84th minute, CiCi Gonzalez was fouled in the box and connected on the penalty to knot the game at one.

In the overtime periods, Tampa managed just one shot and Barry had one corner.

In the shootout, Barry’s Tamara Vuckovich pinged her shot off the right post and Tampa’s Alyson Gregorowicz came up with big saves on Karla Monge and Ashley Harlan to lift the Spartans over the Bucs. Cina Salemi, Gonzalez and Kaley Ward converted their kicks for Tampa, while Manna and Katie Turner connected for Barry. Barry’s Becca Rogers saved a shot from Tampa’s Taylor Wade.
