Women's Soccer Opens With Road Win Over Saints

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers got the 2014 season started right with a 3-0 win over the Flagler Saints on the road on Friday night. Six different players figured into the Bucs’ three goals.

Last year’s leading scorer, Lauren Manna, got the goal parade started in the 22nd minute. Ashley Harlan drove the ball down the left side and whipped a cross into the box that bounded past Saints keeper Desiree Shields. Manna was waiting near the far post to head home the goal.

In the second half, Lavinia Nkomo and Tamara Vuckovich joined the fun. Vuckovich served up a free kick and Nkomo ran on for the header in the 66th minute.

The Scottish imports Christy Grimshaw and Amanda Traynor capped off the scoring in the 81st minute. Grimshaw threaded a pass from the top of the penalty box through the Saints defense to Traynor who slotted it home at the left post.

The Bucs, who held a 25-2 edge in shots, posted the shutout for keeper Becca Rogers. She was not forced to make a save as the Saints failed to put either try on goal. Shields kept the game from getting completely out of hand for Flagler by making 11 saves.

The Bucs return home on Sunday, Sept. 7 to host the Lee Flames at Buccaneer Field. Kickoff is at 7:00 pm and the game can be followed live on the Buccaneer Broadcasting Network, powered by Stretch Internet on GameCentral 2.0.
