Men's Tennis: Triki, Groetsch Alive at South Regional

LAKELAND, Fla. – Barry University’s Ahmed Triki and Fabian Groetsch advanced to the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association NCAA Division II South Region Championships Sunday.

Triki defeated Valdosta State’s Franco Yin Kim, 7-5, 6-2, in the quarterfinals. Groetsch beat Lynn’s Alessio Iannozzi, 6-2, 6-2, in the quarters.

Barry’s Franco Echenique fell to Iannozzi, 6-3, 6-3, in the Round of 16 match suspended by Saturday’s rain. Barry’s Kevin Sielmann lost a three-set battle to West Florida’s Alex Peyrot, 6-3, 2-6, 11-9, in the quarters.

Triki’s semifinal match with Rollins Anton Bettink was suspended by rain Sunday, as was Groetsch’s match with Peyrot.

In the doubles draw, Sielmann and Triki defeated VSU’s Edward Nguyen and Leo Blay, 8-6, in the quarterfinals. The Buccaneers duo move on to meet Lynn’s Danny Riggs and Paolo Volpicelli in the semifinals.

Barry’s Nico Dreer and Echenique lost to Florida Tech’s Wade Ball and Patrick Hernandez, 8-6, in the consolation quarters.
