MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Sophomore women's golfer Nancy Vergara left Thursday to compete in the Copa Los Andes tournament in her native Venezuela next week.

The tournament, featuring South American countries which will follow a match play format over the four days of competition Wednesday through Saturday, will feature teams of five players per country. Pairs of two players will compete against each other in the 18-hole, alternate shot morning format. In the 18-hole afternoon sessions, four singles will compete head-to-head.

"This is a great opportunity for me to go back to my home country to represent Venezuela," Vergara said. "I'm looking forward to the chance to play in a tournament like this."

Vergara, a sophomore from Caracas, Venezuela, tied for second at Barry's final fall tournament as the Buccaneers won the Flagler Fall Slam. She shot a 2-over 146 in the 36-hole event. Vergara shot par in the opening round.

Vergara ranks second on the Buccaneers team in scoring average at 75.38. Her low round is a 1-under 71, and her runner-up finish is the best on the Bucs' team.

"Nancy had a great fall season for us, and really kept it together," Barry coach Shannon Sykora said. "She's been one of our more consistent players, and a reason why we're ranked No. 3 in the country. My hope is that Nancy will have a big spring to help us have a great season."
