Volleyball Revisits PBA for Second Tourney

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University's volleyball team will compete in the Pepsi Bash at the Beach tournament hosted by Palm Beach Atlantic Friday and Saturday in West Palm Beach.

It marks the Buccaneers' second trip to PBA for a tournament this season.

Barry (8-6) will play PBA (17-2) in the featured match at 7 p.m. Friday night. All matches can be seen via LIVE AUDIO and LIVE STATS. The Sailfish received 15 votes in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association national poll.

Friday's meeting marks the first of two between Barry and PBA this year.

Barry plays Bentley University (6-9) at 10 a.m. Saturday, and will conclude the tournament with a noon match against Claflin (11-5).

The Bucs went 2-2 at the season-opening tournament in West Palm Beach, knocking off No. 18 Lewis in a thrilling five-set match. Barry is coming off a comeback five-set win over Nova Southeastern Tuesday in Miami Shores.

Barry is 5-2 in neutral site matches and 1-2 in road contests this season.

Tania Torres has 167 kills and is hitting .205 this year. Ashley Carrero has 136 kills and a .275 attack percentage. Laine Cielena has 51 blocks in 51 sets played, and entered the week ranked 54th in the NCAA Division II in blocks per set. Cielena is third on the team with 85 kills.

Mima Hajdukovic has 494 assists. She entered the week ranked 98th in the country in assists per set, and is coming off a career-best 53-assist performance in Tuesday's five-set win over Nova Southeastern. Jasmine Serna ranks 98th in the country in digs per set, and has 228 digs. Mariana Lisboa, who is out with an injury, ranks second on the team in digs with 105.

The Buccaneers rank 68th nationally in blocks per set.

Barry's next home match is Friday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. when it begins the second phase of Sunshine State Conference play against Florida Southern.
