MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry took care of business, winning in an exhibition game against Chile's National Team, 80-70, Thursday night at Health & Sports Center.
In the Buccaneers' only exhibition of the season before the Nov. 10 regular season opener against Johnson & Wales at home, Barry hit 11 of 31 three-pointers and outrebounded the bigger Chile professional team, 46-38.
"Chile's talented. These guys are professionals," Barry acting head coach Orlando Gonzalez said. "They represent their country."
Bryan Van Cott scored 17 points and had eight rebounds as five Bucs reached double figures. Chad Renfro had 13 points and five boards, Vladimir Raymonvil 10 points and five assists, Justin McCoy 12 points and Filip Toric 11 points, six rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
"We like that balance," Gonzalez said. "We've got a lot of threats offensively."
Chile's Darroll Jones had 20 points, and Ricardo Cardenas 15.
Barry led 44-27 at halftime, using the nine practices to put forth an effective defensive plan in the first 20 minutes. The Bucs were outscored, 43-36, in the second half, but never relinquished the lead. Barry led by as many as 18 in the first half.
Chile, which sank 26 of 40 free throws, cut it to five, 56-51, with 11:37 to play when Jones sank a pair of free throws. But a jumper and a triple by Renfro pushed the Buccaneers lead back to nine with 9:52 remaining. Osven Ledezma's two straight layups helped Chile trim the deficit back to five.
McCoy scored with 3:05 to play to push the Bucs back up 10, and Barry weathered the storm after Chile went to a 3-2 zone the Bucs only spent a day preparing for this year.
"We've only had nine practices, so it was a great opportunity to be in a real game situation," Gonzalez said. "They went to that 3-2 zone, so it was good to see something different."
Barry had 16 assists, but turned the ball over 16 times.
"We just need to clean things up," Gonzalez said. "Obviously, we're not at the point where we want to play defense for 40 minutes. We've got to build it up to 40 minutes of quality defense."
Barry grabbed 17 offensive rebounds, including four each by Aaron Martin, Damien Dwaine and Van Cott. Chile, accustomed to an international perimeter game, was held to two of six from three-point range. Barry outscored Chile, 15-6, in second-chance opportunities.
Chile did not score a field goal over the last 3:53.
"I told the guys, 'There's going to be opportunities for offensive rebounds,'" Gonzalez said, surmising the stat sheet after the game to pick up on the Bucs' work on the offensive glass. "That's 17 extra possessions, which allowed us to shoot the ball 74 times. Being a smaller team, that's good. But we've got to have more of an inside-outside game."
