MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers evened their Sunshine State Conference softball record with a 6-3 win over the Florida Southern Moccasins on Friday night at Buccaneer Field.

The Bucs (13-9, 2-2 SSC) struck first in the second inning. Paul Mackin walked and pinch runner Kattie Hehre trotted home on Alexis Kent’s first career homer, a massive shot to left field.

Defensive miscues helped the Bucs add to their lead in the third, fourth and fifth innings.  In the third, FSC starter Chelsea Ogilvie pulled second baseman Leah Pemberton off the bag to help Barry load the bases and Kelly Martinez drove in the run with a walk. In the fourth, another Ogilvie error put Natalia Ojeda on third and she scored on a wild pitch. In the fifth inning, a pair of errors by shortstop Christie Bailey helped the Bucs score twice. Britney Pugh had a pinch-hit RBI double and also scored a run.

The Mocs (9-12, 3-1 SSC) scored twice in the fourth, to trim the Barry lead to 3-2. Dayna Hunn led off with a triple and, one out later, Pemberton walked to put runners at the corners. On Pemberton’s stolen base, Hunn came home when Kayla Monroy’s throw sailed wide. Pemberton scored on a single by Bailey.

Florida Southern got another run in the seventh. Kelliann Connors drew a leadoff walk and pinch runner Cassie Haynes scored two outs later on a single by Gianni Artidiello.

Alexis Yohe (6-4) earned the win for the Bucs. She went the distance, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks and struck out six. Ogilvie (6-6) took the loss for the Mocs. She gave up six runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks and struck out six.

The series concludes tomorrow with a doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
