Planas-Arteaga Becomes 1st Barry Position Player In Cape Cod Baseball League

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Rising junior Sheehan Planas-Arteaga, who became the first Buccaneer position player to earn a spot in the Cape Cod League, made his debut last night with the Chatham Anglers.

Playing centerfield for the Anglers, Planas-Arteaga knocked in a pair of runs in a four-run eighth inning that led Chatham over Wareham 4-0 in the CCL opener for both teams.

The Cape Cod League, the most prestigious of the sanctioned collegiate baseball leagues, has been operating since 1885. The season in the Cape run through the middle of August, highlighted by the 2013 Cape League All-Star game on Saturday, July 27 at Red Wilson FIeld, home of the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox.

Along with Planas-Arteaga, a host of other Buccaneers are also honing their skills in sanctioned summer leagues around the country.

A quartet of players landed in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.Rising senior infielders Joe Iorio and Adrian English both signed on with the Newport Gulls, while rising sophomore pitchers Joeanthony Rivera and Adrian Benitez signed with the North Adams Steeplecats and the Saratoga Brigade respectively. The NECBL runs through the first week in August.

The Coastal Plains League, in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, landed a trio of Bucs. Rising senior pitchers Calvin Rayburn and Tyler Petsch are toiling with the Moorehead City Marlins, while fellow hurler Rene Estrada, a rising junior, is with the Petersburg Generals. The CPL runs through August 17.

Three more players each signed in different leagues. Rising junior catcher Connor Olivieri signed with the Litchfield Dolphins of the Beach Collegiate Baseball League, a second-year league in South Carolina. The BCBL runs through July 13.

Rising sophomores Mike Diaz and JC Cardenas have followed up their outstanding rookie campaigns with stints in the Ohio Valley League and the Valley Baseball League respectively. Outfielder Diaz signed with the Fulton Railroaders, while shortstop Cardenas caught on with the Front Royal Cardinals. Both league run through late July.
