MIAMI – The Barry University volleyball team volunteered at Shake-a-Leg Miami on August 31, spending several hours cleaning an island in Biscayne Bay that the organization uses to provide opportunities for children, youth and adults with or without physical challenges.

Shake-A-Leg Miami is South Florida's premier adaptive water sports community that serves people of all abilities.  With many programs offered seven days a week, Shake-A-Leg Miami provides many opportunities for children, youth and adults with or without physical challenges to experience beautiful Biscayne Bay.  Shake-A-Leg Miami is a not-for-profit working with children & adults with physical, developmental and economic challenges in a marine environment, utilizing Biscayne Bay to teach environmental lessons, therapeutic sailing, swimming & kayaking.

“The Shake-A-Leg organization impacted me personally because I have an older sister with a disability,” junior Rachel Funk said. “Because of organizations like Shake-a-Leg my sister has the opportunity to experience things that she normally would not have. It felt great not only to give back to the community, but it was especially rewarding for me because it hit so close to home.”

“It was fun because we kayaked out to an island to help clean,” freshman Ivana Didanovic said. “It was a completely new experience for me and I enjoyed the time working together with the team and helping the community.”

“Working with Shake-A-Leg was a great experience.  Not only was I helping the community, I also helped the children and adults with physical challenges to enjoy the beauty of Biscayne Bay,”  freshman Amanda Brill said.
