Women's Tennis Duo Claims Clemson Consolation Title

Women's Tennis Duo Claims Clemson Consolation Title

CLEMSON, S.C. -- Barry University women's tennis players Emma Onila and Linda Fritschken won a pair of doubles matches Friday at the Clemson Duckworth Classic.

Onila and Fritschken, who captured the ITA South Region Championships doubles title on Monday, won the Flight 1 Consolation Finals Friday. The Bucs pair went 2-2. Fritschken and Onila defeated Andressa Garcia and Allie Garcia, of Winthrop, 8-5. In the consolation finals, the Bucs pair defeated Zoe Hamell and Ericka Rivero, of UNC-Asheville, 8-5. 

Maria Reis and Cristina Valladares dropped a pair of doubles matches, losing to Clemson's Yui Lynn Miao and Tristen Dewar, 8-2, and UNC-Asheville's Amryn Soldier and Christine Boisenvain, 8-7 (8).

The Buccaneers will compete in the tournament throughout the weekend.

Players from Barry's women's team is also competing at the Varner Invitational in Winter Park, Fla. At that tournament, Elisabeth Abanda defeated Maria Sablina, 6-0, 6-0 in Flight 1. Barry's Karina Goia fell to Mina Matsuba, 6-3, 4-6, 10-3.

In Flight 2, Akemi Maehama defeated Gaby Chinchilla, 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 before losing to Andrea Berakova, 6-0, 6-9. Barry's Kimmy Twelker Alina Jane, 7-6 (3), 6-1, and then got by Johanna Olson, 6-3, 6-2. 

Jasi Witherspoon, a first-year Buccaneer, lost to Bianka Roberts, 6-2, 6-2, in Flight 3. Isabela Miro defeated Louisa Pintado, 6-2, 6-1, and Kate Wookey, 6-2, 6-1.
