CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Barry University's Cristina Valladares advanced to the semifinals of the University of Miami's Fall Invite singles tournament Saturday before she fell to the No. 1 seed in the Green Bracket.
Valladares beat No. 4 seed Reka Muller of Auburn, 6-2, 6-4, in the quarterfinals. Her run ended when she lost to No. 1 seed Lina Lileikite, 6-2, 6-2, in the semis. Valladares will play for third place in Sunday's 10 a.m. match against Miami's Brittany Dubins.
Barry's Karina Goia bounced back from a competitive first-set loss to Miami's Stephanie Wagner to blank the Hurricanes player in the second set of a 6-3, 0-6, 6-1 victory for the 'Canes. Goia dropped her ensuing match to Miami's Kelsey Laurente, 6-4, 6-4. Goia will play for seventh place in the Orange bracket.
Elisabeth Abanda of Barry fell to Miami's Clementina Riobueno in an Orange consolation quarterfinals battle, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. Abanda later picked up a victory over Purdue's Lynda Xepoleas when the Boilermakers player retired due to injury.
Barry's Kimmy Twelker won by default over Purdue's Nicole Robinson, following a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Mississippi's Erin Stephens in the Orange consolation quarters.
In the Green quarterfinals, Barry's Akemi Maehama fell victim to Dubins, 6-2, 6-0. She then lost to Muller, 6-2, 6-1. Maehama will play Auburn's Jackie Kasler for seventh place Sunday.
In the Orange doubles bracket, Abanda and Twelker lost in a dogfight to Dubins and Wagner, 8-7, in the third place match.
In the Green consolation third place match featuring an all-Buccaneer battle, Valladares and Akemi Maehama won by default over Karina Goia and Isabela Miro.
Maria Reis lost to Miami's Deborah Suarez, 6-4, 6-3. That followed a 6-1, 6-3 setback to Ole Miss' Allie Robbins in the Green consolation quarters.
At the Super Bowl doubles tournament in Fort Myers, Barry's Emma Onila and Linda Fritschken beat Kristina Marova and Hui-I Huang of Embry Riddle, 6-1, 6-1. The Buccaneers duo will play for the title Sunday.
