Help Support Flood Victims in the Balkans

Help Support Flood Victims in the Balkans

Dear Members of the Barry Community:

The worst floods in more than a century have submerged large parts of both Serbia and Bosnia following unprecedented levels of rainfall. More than 1 million people have been affected. Dozens of people have lost their lives and hundreds of thousands have been forced from their homes. The projected costs of recovery are in the billions.

Our Balkan students are appealing to the Barry community to support their homelands.

Donate Online

Please consider making an online donation directly to the Red Cross of Serbia and/or the Red Cross Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Both websites have areas on the homepage in English to make a donation in U.S. dollars.

Donate In Person

The Department of Campus Ministry and Division of Student Affairs are also collecting monetary donations for the relief efforts. You can bring your donation to the Campus Ministry Office or Landon 300 by Friday, June 13. A special collection will also be taken at Mass in Cor Jesu Chapel on Sunday, June 1.

Cash will be accepted, along with checks and money orders made payable to the Consulate General of the Republic of Serbia in Chicago. (Include “poplave – pomoc” in the memo to designate it to flood relief.) Campus Ministry will ensure all donations are sent to the Consulate General.

Pray for Those in Need

Please also consider saying a prayer for those affected:

God, you are in the midst of those who suffer
May all affected by the floods in the Balkans feel your healing presence.
God, you are in the hands of those who reach out
Help responders in their courageous work.

God, you are in the hearts of those compassionate ones
Whose prayers cry out for their families
Whose prayers cry out for their neighbors Whose prayers cry out even for strangers
Bless and comfort those who mourn.

God, you are in the still small voice,

The gentle whisper that follows
May our ears always hear
May our hearts always cry out for one another
May our hands always reach out to one another
And may we always walk like you walk
In solidarity with those who suffer
And so reflect your presence and comfort.
