ADSOE faculty member encourages educators to advocate for children with special needs

Judy Harris-Looby, PhD, chair of the Adrian Dominican School of Education’s Exceptional Student Education Department, recently presented at the Norma Darlington 25th Annual Founders’ Day Lecture on September 24 at Shortwood Teachers’ College in Kingston, Jamaica.

The annual lecture gives several hundred students and educators the opportunity to enrich their insight on education related topics. This year, the focus was on exceptional student education.

Harris-Looby’s lecture, titled “Exceptional Student Education: Preparing Teachers to Provide Quality Education for Students with Special Needs,” was highly commended as Jamaica seeks to provide educators with resources and knowledge to impact the transformation of special education in Jamaica.

Harris-Looby stressed the importance of pursuing Exceptional Student Education as a profession and dedicating a career to it in order to effectively surmount the adversity that is presented to struggling youth with disabilities in the country. She also focused on making educational opportunities accessible to students with disabilities to affect transformation for the individuals, their families, and ultimately, society at-large.
