PhD counseling student George Walker selected as an NBCC MFP Fellow

The NBCC Foundation, an affiliate of the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), recently selected student George Walker for the National Board for Certified Counselors Minority Fellowship Program (NBCC MFP). As an NBCC MFP Fellow, Walker will receive funding and training to support his education and facilitate his service to underserved minority populations.

Walker is a licensed professional counselor and a National Certified Counselor (NCC). His clinical interests and experience includes extensive work with dual-diagnosed populations and work with inmates returning to the community. He is interested in providing a strong multicultural perspective to future counselors by situating social justice as a core competence.

The NBCC MFP will distribute a $20,000 educational award Walker and the 21 other doctoral-level counseling students selected to receive the fellowship. Walker is a graduate of Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Barry University, where he is also in the final year of his doctoral degree in counseling.

The NBCC MFP is made possible by a grant awarded to NBCC by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in August 2012. The goal of the program is to strengthen the infrastructure that engages diverse individuals in counseling and increases the number of professional counselors providing effective, culturally competent services to underserved populations.

This is the second year a Barry University PhD Counseling student has been selected as an NBCC MFP Fellow. Learn more about Barry University’s PhD Counseling program.
