Doctorate in Social Work (DSW) Time Requirements & Candidacy

The School of Social Work establishes time limits for coursework and candidacy. Successful completion of the Residency Seminar II course transitions one from student to candidacy. Candidates are granted a maximum of six subsequent semesters to complete the remaining required coursework and to produce and defend the final manuscript.

The Doctoral Committee reviews the progress of students who have not completed the degree at the end of four years from the time of admission. As a result of the review, the Committee may recommend additional coursework and/or enhanced academic support systems. At the end of the fifth year, the Doctoral Committee will review the status of candidates and request a meeting with the student and his/her Doctoral Project Committee Chair.
