Letter from the Vice President

Mission and Student Engagement

Dear Buccaneer,

I hope that you will take full advantage of your time at Barry University by participating in opportunities that challenge, inspire, and expand your worldview through personal connections with faculty, staff, peers, alumni and the surrounding community. The staff and I in the Division of Mission and Student Engagement are committed to Barry's aim to pursue truth for the service of humanity and expect you to be active partners in your educational journey.

We are also concerned about your moral, ethical, and spiritual development and believe that students can live up to a very high standard of personal behavior that demonstrates respect for the community standards inherent to a Catholic, Adrian Dominican institution. We want students to learn to make wise and responsible decisions based upon communication with peers and mentors and personal reflection.

Ultimately, with your involvement, we intend to create a caring, respectful, and productive community of student learners and leaders. We encourage students to reach beyond their grasp and to develop their full potential. The world needs leaders for a just and humane world. Through active involvement in your college experience, you will develop the skills and qualities that will allow you to provide this leadership. Our aim is to help you prepare to become "who" you were called to be.

We wish you much success as you fulfill your academic goals and as you learn more about yourself and your place in the world – locally, nationally and globally. As Sister Catherine once said, "Be who God meant you to be, and you will set the world on fire."

Sincerely,

Scott F. Smith, Ph.D.
Vice President for Mission and Student Engagement
