Barry University’s chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society, recently earned a major accolade. The chapter’s literary journal, “What Oft Was Thought,” captured second place for the 2013-2014 Sigma Tau Delta Outstanding Literary Arts Journal award.
“What Oft Was Thought” is wholly published by Barry’s Alpha Alpha Xi Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta. The journal, which is published biennially, presents the works of Barry University student authors. The publication features poetry, fiction, children’s literature, essays, and photography. Students submit their work through an annual writing competition.
Barry’s Sigma Tau Delta chapter received a $400 cash prize for the second place finish. In addition to the cash prize, three Barry students joined Dr. Lillian Schanfield, the group’s faculty sponsor, at the 2014 Sigma Tau Delta national convention in Savannah from Feb. 28 – March 2.
Sigma Tau Delta was founded in 1924 at Dakota Wesleyan University. The organization’s central purpose is to confer distinction upon students of the English language and literature in undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies. Sigma Tau Delta also recognizes the accomplishments of professional writers who have contributed to the fields of language and literature.
