Dr. Helen Connell Film Essay Award Is Open for Submissions Until March 1.

Sponsored by the Department of English and Foreign Languages and Sigma Tau Delta, the Dr. Helen Connell Film Essay Award is taking essay submissions until March 1, 2021. The award was created to promote film as an art form and in honor of Dr. Helen Connell, an Associate Professor in the Department of English and Foreign Languages who served for several years as Chair of the Department. The winner will receive $50, acknowledgement at the Honors Convocation in May, and have their work published in the Sigma Tau Delta literary journal, What Oft Was Thought.

Rules and Submission Instructions

  • Currently registered students in good standing can submit one essay between 2000 and 3500 words.
  • Essays should apply critical approaches to film and television. You may wish to explore issues related to themes, auteur theories, mise-en-scène, film history, feminist theories, Marxist theories, and semiotics.
  • E-mail submissions as attachments to: agreenbaum@barry.edu.
  • Subject should read “Helen Connell Essay Award.”
  • Entries must be typed in Microsoft Word using Times New Roman, font size 12.
  • In a separate attachment, please provide a brief biography including your name, student number, address, telephone, email, and academic major.
