Message from ESE’s Chair
Welcome to the Department of Exceptional Student Education at Barry University. We are committed to providing prospective teachers with the knowledge and skills they need to work successfully with children and youth with mild disabilities (grades K-12).
Barry University offers a Master's degree program in Exceptional Student Education (ESE) with specialization options in Autism and Gifted Education. From its inception, the Department has emphasized meeting the needs of culturally and/or linguistically diverse students with exceptionalities. Prospective teachers are taught how to challenge students to improve and maximize their learning potentials.
Teachers learn to collaborate with other professionals in planning appropriate ESE services and gain hands-on training through clinical field experience placements in the public schools. Many of our graduates are offered teaching positions while still enrolled in the program. Schools frequently recognize Barry graduates as their "Rookie Teacher of the Year."
