Stephen Althouse

Born in Washington, DC and raised in rural Pennsylvania, sculptor-photographer Stephen Althouse received his Master of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University. His undergraduate study was at Rollins College, Tyler School of Art, Temple University, and the University of Miami where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture.

Althouse collects or makes objects that relate to significant life events. Experiences and interactions with other people, which are founded upon the extreme positive or negative attributes of humankind, often serve as catalysts for his visual expression of life. In his studio he creates minimalist assemblages of his objects and then photographs and digitally prints them to a very large scale in black and white. His imagery is metaphoric and often includes written phrases in non-mainstream dialects as well as in Braille.

Stephen Althouse’s unique artwork has been extensively collected by major museums in North America, South America, and Europe, and after leaving academia he continues to create and exhibit his work. He was awarded the position as artist-in-residence at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Liège, Belgium through a Fulbright Grant, and he received additional American grant support from Innova papers, and German grants from Hahnemühle papers and Epson printers in support of his fine art digital printing.

Shrouds Series

…Althouse’s Shrouds represent a remarkable combination of intellect with ritual, hope with despair, [and] his phrases written in Braille add unquenchable suspense to his unique art…”
