Dr. Claudette Spalding, is an Associate Dean, College of Nursing and Health Sciences and the Chair for the Division of Nursing at Barry University.

Dr. Spalding began her nursing career as a registered nurse in obstetrics and pediatrics, holding various positions including that of Divisional Director and Chief Nursing Officer for a large hospital system. Dr. Spalding joined Barry University in 1994.  She has over 18 years of experience teaching in baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral programs in nursing.  Dr. Spalding is a past president of the Lambda Chi chapter of Sigma Theta International Honor Society of Nursing.


Dr. Spalding’s research interests include spirituality and underserved and disenfranchised populations. She has carried out a number of research projects and has presented locally, nationally and internationally on the subjects of spirituality, multicultural health and willingness to serve underserved and disenfranchised populations. She is the author of the research instrument ‘Willingness to Serve Underserved and Disenfranchised Scale’ (WSUDS), an instrument which has been used by researchers globally. She has also supervised a number of doctoral students, who have their interests in spirituality and multicultural health.  Dr. Spalding has authored several HRSA educational grants and co-authored a Florida Department of Education grant.
