Honor Societies

Academic Affairs

General Information

The Honors Committee accepts applications twice a year for elections to the following honor societies: Alpha Chi, Delta Epsilon Sigma, and Kappa Gamma Pi. Only undergraduate students are eligible to apply. Phi Eta Sigma is for first-year students only. Phi Eta Sigma elects students once a year (during Spring semester). Students eligible for Phi Eta Sigma will be contacted by the faculty moderator by the end of February of each year. Please note that there is no application form required for Phi Eta Sigma. Once contacted, the faculty moderator will inform the applicants on how to complete the application process. For Alpha Chi, Delta Epsilon Sigma, Kappa Gamma Pi, and St. Catherine Medal, see deadlines for the appropriate semester.

If you meet the criteria, please complete the appropriate application form for each honor society you are applying. Please note that students must be nominated for St. Catherine Medal. Your complete application - checklist, service and leadership activities verification form, and letter of recommendation for each honor society for which you are applying - must be delivered to the office of the moderator of the honor society for which you are applying by 5:00 P.M. on the due date. If the due date falls on a weekend or university holiday, the deadline will be 5:00 P.M. on the next scheduled business day.

What is the difference between the Honors Program and Honor Societies?

Honors Program

The Honors Program is an academic based program where students take 21 credit hours of honors courses, in addition to courses for their degree program. Depending on their degree program, students can use 6-12 credit hours from the honors program to fulfill liberal arts requirements set forth by Barry University. Graduated high school students or transfer students who meet the GPA and/or SAT/ACT score requirements are invited to participate in the program.  Those students who were not initially invited are able to apply after completing two semesters at Barry as long as they have produced the required cumulative GPA of 3.5 or more.

Honor Societies

Joining an Honor Society is completely separate from the Honors Program. Honor Societies recognize all students who have shown academic excellence during their time at Barry. There are four honor societies to consider – Alpha Chi for seniors, Delta Epsilon Sigma and Kappa Gamma Pi for both juniors and seniors, and Phi Eta Sigma for first-year students. Barry students must submit all application materials for induction consideration. Deadlines and qualifications vary among these four honor societies.

Being part of both is truly ideal, but not required, for students seeking a more challenging academic experience during their time at Barry University.
