Members of Barry University’s Minority Association of Pre-Health Students (MAPS) recently participated in events to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS to commemorate World AIDS Day 2012.
On Friday, Nov. 30, MAPS members distributed information on infection statistics in college-aged populations and red ribbons on campus. On World AIDS Day, Saturday, Dec. 1, MAPS members volunteered at the World AIDS Day Empowerment Conference sponsored by Empower U, Inc., a non-profit organization committed to HIV/AIDS education. The event kicked off with the World AIDS Day Walk, followed by a day of health-related events including workshops and free HIV screenings.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and the American College Health Association, an estimated one in 500 college students is infected with HIV.
