Kristy Singletary, Accounting and Marketing graduate of the Barry University Andreas School of Business, offers tips on how to survive and thrive in a crisis in Authority Magazine profile.
One of the takeaways from the pandemic should be the need to focus on self adventure, according to Barry University Andreas School of Business alumna Kristy Singletary in a recent profile in Authority Magazine. “Let’s make authenticity and energy to be the new currency,” she said.
Singletary graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science degree, double majoring in Accounting and Marketing. She isGlobal Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Manager at Verizon Media and also serves as a Human Resource Officer for the D.C. Army National Guard.
The Authority Magazine series focuses on crisis and how to adapt and overcome. In the piece, Singletary discusses lessons from the pandemic, as well as lessons she’s learned in her career and in the military. She also identifies her last year at Barry as a difficult year where she took on too much.
“I recognized that it was not a failure but a lesson in taking care of myself and my primary responsibilities,” she said.
After graduation, Singletary started working as a Financial Accounts Specialist for the Department of Veterans Affairs, then worked for the Department of Commerce and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement before landing her job at Verizon.
Singletary credits her Barry education with helping her succeed.
“Barry provided a great foundation to help me recognize my own talents and put them into action,” she said. “The professors provided guidance to enable students to evolve as leaders. The Barry community is so rich with people who are always willing to help, and it's always encouraging to know you have such a strong support system.
While at Barry, Singletary was a standout on the women’s basketball team. The chance to play basketball was one of the main reasons she chose Barry.
“Coming out of high school, my primary focus for colleges was to attend a school to play collegiate basketball,” she said. “I was incredibly impressed by the culture, community, and academic rigor. I knew that I would have a unique college experience.
Singletary also credits basketball and her coursework with helping her understand the value of teamwork.
“I always remember my Organizational Behavior class because it emphasized the beauty of teamwork and how every person on your team provides a valuable perspective,” she said.
