MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers split a non-conference softball doubleheader with the 20th-ranked Molloy Lions on Tuesday night at Buccaneer Field, dropping the first game 3-0, but rebounding to take the nightcap 2-0.

In the nightcap, Britney Pugh (3-2) tossed a six-hit shutout, walking one and striking out three. The Bucs (16-10) scored single runs in the second and third innings off Lions starter Kelly Jansen. In the second, Kelly Martinez singled and stole second. She scored on a double by Alexis Kent. In the third, Ashley Fernandez knocked in Julie Brito with a single up the middle.

Jansen (5-3) took the loss. She allowed two runs on six hits and five walks and struck out three.

In the opening game, the Lions (12-4) got on the board in the first inning. Jeana Frey walked and scored on a ground out. That would be all the offense Megan Butterworth (6-1) would need as she shutout the Bucs on four hits. She walked three and struck out four.

After giving up the first-inning run, Barry starter Alexis Yohe (7-5) set down 16 of the next 17 batters, including the side in order in the second to fifth innings. But she got in trouble in the sixth. After a leadoff bunt single by Milan Botte, Yohe retired the next two hitters. But Dayna White lined a 1-1 pitch over the leftfield wall to make it 3-0. Yohe went the distance, walked two and struck out seven.

The Bucs open a Sunshine State Conference series on Friday, Mar. 15 at 6:00 pm against Nova Southeastern. The series concludes with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
