Men's Golf 2nd After Day 1 of SSC Championships

DADE CITY, Fla. -- Barry University's No. 2-ranked men's golf team is within two strokes of the lead after the opening round of the Sunshine State Conference Championships Sunday.

The Bucs shot 290 on the 7,094-yard Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club course. No. 1 Nova Southeastern shot two strokes better than Barry in the first of three rounds for a championship event that runs through Tuesday.

Barry junior Jared Dalga shot 2-under 70, anchored by five birdies to find himself in a tie for third with Lynn's Daniel Young near the top of the leaderboard. Nova's Ricardo Celia and Eckerd's Jake Solomon are tied for first, one stroke ahead of Dalga and Young.

Four golfers are tied for fifth after shooting 71.

Lynn is third, two strokes behind the Buccaneers at 292. The top six teams are within seven strokes of the lead.

Competing in his third event of the season, Bucs senior Simon Forsslund is tied for ninth after shooting par Sunday. He ripped off six birdies, including four in a row on the back nine.

Barry freshman Adam Svensson and junior Scott Smyers are tied for 12th. Svensson put together a four-birdie, 2-over 74. Smyers birdied the 534-yard, par-5 ninth hole in the first round. Senior Marcus Segerstrom shot 80.
