Men's Soccer Throttles Sharks To Close Rivalry Week

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers opened up 2-0 in Sunshine State Conference men’s soccer play for the first time since 2010 after a 4-1 thrashing of cross-town rival Nova Southeastern to end Rivalry Week.

The Bucs (5-5-1, 2-0-0 SSC) got on the board in the third minute. Joong Kim scored at 2:35 with assists from Mumbi Kwesele and Ryan King. King assisted Thomas Coombes just 0:23 seconds later on the game winner.

It stayed 2-0 until the 60th minute while the Sharks (3-4-2, 0-2-1 SSC) trimmed the lead to one. Dylan Papa scored with an assist from Vincenzo Padula.

Barry got the goal back in the 63rd minute. Bryan Brown drove the ball up the right wing and crossed it into the box for Michael Fernandez who finished with the header.

In the 66th minute, Patrick Drmola punched in a header of his own on a corner kick from Shaun Herselman.

The Sharks actually held a 19-18 edge in shots, though the teams were tied 8-8 on goal. Johnny Rodrigues stopped seven shots for the Bucs, while Nova’s Nate Cox was only able to deflect four.

The Bucs travel to Winter Park, Fla., on Saturday to face the #2-ranked Rollins Tars. Both teams are knotted at the top of the conference at 2-0-0.
