MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University's volleyball team dropped its third straight match in a three-set loss to Rollins Friday.
The Buccaneers lost to the Tars, 25-20, 25-15, 25-20, on a night when Barry hit .344 in the opening set, only to be outdone by Rollins' .419.
Barry (8-12, 1-8 Sunshine State Conference) was playing catch-up most of the way. The Bucs never led in the opening set. They tied it at 13-13 in the second set when Laine Cielena's kill fell to the floor, only to have Rollins (18-6, 5-4) go on a five-point surge before closing out the second set. Barry tied the third set at 8-8 on Ruth Harrington's attack error, and the Bucs closed to within one, 14-13, on Jayla Trombley's kill. But Rollins never relinquished control in a match where all sorts of different buttons were pushed.
The Buccaneers had a .182 attack percentage, while the Tars hit .337. Barry gave away seven points on service errors. Rollins committed three errors on the serve.
Barry, which hosts No. 2 Tampa at 4 p.m. Saturday, committed 17 hitting errors in 99 swings. Rollins had 13 errors in 92 attacks.
Buccaneers senior outside hitter Ashley Carrero had 12 kills, 10 digs and a .321 attack percentage. It marked the sixth straight match Carrero has banged down double figures in kills. She hit over .320 for the third time this season.
Freshman middle blocker Ivana Didanovic hit .533, pounding nine kills. That was the fifth time she hit over .500 in a match this year.
Jenny Trinidad, who was replaced by Mariana Ruiz in the third set, had 30 assists, marking the seventh time this year she's had 30 or more assists in a match.
Barry, which led the SSC in aces per set entering the match, mustered up just three. Kristen Reid, Jasmine Serna and Didanovic each had one. Rollins served five aces, with Ruth Harrington collecting two to go along with her nine kills and 11 digs.
Katlyn Sawyer had 12 kills for the Tars, and Camille Indest had nine.
