MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers improved to 3-2 with their third straight win, beating Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras 59-51 in the Health & Sports Center in women’s basketball action on Wednesday night.
Tyler Hardy scored a game-high 19 points and added 16 rebounds, a career high, to lead the Bucs. Colette Eule chipped in 16 points. Sheila Reyes led the Gallitas (0-4) with 18 points and seven boards. Roxyaliz Munoz had 16 points and Irmaire Colon added 11.
The Gallitas jumped on top early, leading 17-10 at the 11:17 mark on a layup by Colon. But the Bucs closed the half on an 18-8 run to take a 28-25 lead into the break.
In the second period, the Bucs quickly pushed the lead to double figures, 35-25, in the first three minutes and held a double-digit lead for most of the period. It swelled to as many as 18, 56-38, on a jumper by Danika Pisconeri at 4:46, but the Bucs managed only three points the rest of the way and Gallitas trimmed the lead to eight at the end.
Barry is off now for the next 10 days before returning on Saturday, Dec. 7 to host the Tampa Spartans in their Sunshine State Conference opener.
