MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers got the pre-season started off right with a 3-0 win over FC Surge in women’s soccer exhibition action at Buccaneer Field Friday night.
The Bucs dominated run of play, out-shooting the Surge, from the Women’s Premier Soccer League, 26-4 including 17-1 on goal. The also had 13 corners to just one for the Surge.
Freshman Christy Grimshaw was the offensive star for the Bucs. She broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute and added an assist on the capper in the 63rd.
The Bucs had a number of chances early on. In the first 13 minutes, the Bucs put four of five shots on goal and three of the four were cleared off the line by defenders. Starting keeper Reena Boruk also notched her one save during the run.
Finally in the 32nd minute, Lavinia Nkomo drove the ball down the right sideline and flicked a cross into the box to Grimshaw who beat Boruk into the upper left corner.
The Surge, who had several Barry alumnae on the roster, went with one of them, Melissa Toledo, in goal in the second half and the move paid dividends as the former Buc helped keep the game from getting out of hand with nine saves in the period.
In the 52nd minute, however, her defense turned the ball over in the box and Barry’s Natalie Diaz was in the right place at the right time to slot home the goal.
Then, in the 62nd minute, Grimshaw slipped a pass down the heart of the Surge defense and fellow Scottish freshman Amanda Traynor ran on for a one-on-one opportunity against Toledo and got the best of the former Buc.
Becca Rogers produced a clean sheet for Barry, but was largely unchallenged, making just one save on four shots.
The Bucs have another exhibition on Friday, Aug. 29 at 7:00 pm against AFC Torino and open the regular season on Sept. 5 against Flagler in St. Augustine, Fla.
